4 Months Old Today!

Andrea’s 4 month appointment was this morning. She’s 14 lbs. 6.5 oz. according to the dr’s scale (75th %ile), and 25 1/2 inches long (90th %ile). She hated the shots, but recovered quickly. Then she had to get some blood drawn to test her thryoid, because I am on anti-thyroid medicine for my hyperthryoidism. Everything says it’s safe for breastfeeding, but my endocrinologist wants us to monitor her thyroid just to be safe. She REALLY hated the blood draw, which they did with a heel prick. I don’t think we’ll do that again, as long as her levels are good this time. Her poor foot and heel are purple, and she screamed so hard she choked twice. It was AWFUL. Fortunately, she calmed down really quickly and fell asleep on the way home. Poor baby.

3-week Checkup

We took Andrea to the doctor on Monday for her 3-week checkup. She weighed in at a healthy 9 pounds 1/2 ounce, which is the 75th-percentile, and is 22 inches long, which is the 90th-percentile. The doctor put a little silver nitrate on her belly button to help it finish healing, and we talked about the shots she’ll be getting at her next appointment.

Andrea’s first night at the hospital was spent under bili lights, because a blood test confirmed that she had ABO incompatibility, which causes jaundice. (Kelley has O blood, and Andrea has either A or B blood.) It was very sad to watch her in her sunglasses under the lights. We couldn’t really hold her or anything — she could only come out of the lights to eat. The jaundice made her too sleepy to nurse, so starting Monday morning, I had to pump and feed her breastmilk via a syringe.
