Cute Cousins

We’ve had a great time in Washington visiting Paul’s family. It’s been so fun to see Andrea play with her girl cousins, who are 4 and 9. They’ve gone to the Children’s Museum, played a lot of dress-up, decorated one of Oma’s Christmas trees with random toys and other items, played hide-and-seek, and pretended to “exercise”, plus a bunch of other loud and giggly little girl silliness. Here are some cute pictures of the girls from the past week…

We rode the train!

We flew out to Washington State last week to visit Paul’s family. Flights were a lot cheaper to Seattle than to Portland, so we flew into Seattle and then took Amtrak down to Vancouver, WA, near where Paul’s family lives. It was quite the adventure.

We got into Seattle and figured we’d eat and hang out at the airport for a bit before heading to the Amtrak station, but we found out that there isn’t really any food (or anything else) outside security. So we made our way to the light rail station at the airport and took the light rail up to downtown Seattle where the Amtrak station is. Andrea was fascinated by the light rail train, and even more excited to be going on “Thomas” (the Tank Engine) for our next train ride. (We kept trying to explain that the next train wouldn’t look exactly like Thomas, but she had already made up her mind that it would be Thomas.

Here’s a picture of her on the light rail:

We checked in at Amtrak, then walked to lunch at a nearby restaurant. Of course it was cold and rainy. (We were in Seattle, after all.) Andrea loved the adventure though. We packed her rain boots and raincoat in the top of our suitcase and got them out for her to stomp around Seattle in. She was so adorable!

Weekend in Missouri

Andrea’s Great-Grandmother (my Grandmother) in Columbia, Missouri was diagnosed with ovarian cancer several years ago. She fought it with chemo for years, but in the past few months, they exhausted all the treatment options and her health began deteriorating. Fortunately, we were able to go up and spend Spring Break with her this year before she really got sick. Here’s a picture I love of her and Andrea from that trip.

My grandmother passed away last weekend, on November 6th, 2011. So Friday morning, we loaded up the car and drove to Columbia, Missouri to be with my family there for the weekend and attend the funeral on Sunday.

Andrea was terrific this whole weekend – she was on her very best behavior the entire time. We are unbelievably proud of her for being such a big girl through a lot of driving and a couple of busy days. On the way up, she watched a lot of movies and shows on her iPad in the car, and took a nice long nap, so that kept her pretty distracted most of the time. But she still asked over and over again throughout the 13 hour trip, “Are we in Missouri yet?” – starting about 30 minutes from our house. On the way back, we drove overnight, so we didn’t have to stop for meals or anything else, and we made it in just over 10 hours. She slept almost the entire way, and then was happy to be moved from her car seat to her bed for a few more hours of sleep.

She loved seeing all the family and wasn’t shy at all. And she loved playing with all my relative’s dogs, especially playing fetch with my aunt’s dog. My cousin’s dog was a little crazier and kept hanging his mouth open, and Andrea kept laughing and telling him, “I’m not tasty!” I told her he was nice and didn’t want to eat her, but she said, “It looks like he does!” and pointed to her own teeth to show me what she meant. LOL! Saturday night she was totally crazy and in full entertainment mode. She kept jumping off the couch onto the beanbag and saying it was a swimming pool, she “helped” the guys play ping-pong, she got her Uncle Thor to help her with some tumbling (and even try a bit of his own), and she did a whole modern dance performance thing for us.

Look who thinks she’s a model now…

So after our little photo shoot on Monday, it seems like Andrea really embraced being a model. Tuesday we met our friends at the playground, then they came back to our house. It was a beautiful day. I brought my camera, but was having such a nice time talking with my friend and watching the girls play that I didn’t even get it out. As they were leaving, Andrea put on some shorts and we went outside to see them off. The weather was beautiful, and Andrea got out her bubble shooter and was playing and having fun. Then she went and just laid down on the hill that makes up our front yard. As she laid there on her back with her hands behind her head and her knees bent, I thought, “What a great picture!” so I ran in to get my camera from inside the front door. As I knelt down to take her picture, she decided she should start modeling for me instead of just laying peacefully like she had been. So I took this picture of her hilariously fake modeling pose. 🙂

I started laughing at her and she realized she was being funny, so then she started laughing her head off, and it was so cute I quickly snapped another picture. It’s a little out of focus, but I love the look on her face. She has the greatest laugh.

Fall Photo Shoot

Andrea has been OBSESSED with fall leaves ever since last fall when Paul got out the leaf-blower and piled all our leaves up in the backyard before blowing them into the forested part of our lot. She had so much fun that ever since the first leaf fell this year, she’s been asking if there are enough leaves to go pile them up and jump in them. And pretty much every time we go anywhere, we have to bring at least one leaf home with us. According to Andrea, each leaf she finds is the prettiest, most perfect leaf she’s ever seen. We have a whole box of dried leaves that she’s been collecting.

So today was a slow day, and the weather was beautiful, so I decided to take Andrea out this evening to play in the leaves. My ulterior motive for suggesting this is that I wanted to try a fall photo shoot as the sun was starting to set. I’ve been working on my photography skills, and I figured if I let her bury herself in fall leaves, she might actually cooperate. And the fact that I let her throw a bunch of leaves at my head helped a lot, too. 😉 For some reason, nothing makes her smile more for pictures than something gross being dumped/tossed on my head. Paul often stands behind me and pretends to pour water on me or sprinkles mulch on my head and such. It leads to the greatest smiles. Haha.

Here are some of the best pics from today’s shoot… The first three are from our backyard, the rest are from a park a couple blocks away. We don’t get much late day sun in our backyard, so I wanted to try a second location.

I hate that her hands aren’t in the picture, but I still love the cute look on her face. She’s just thrown handfuls of leaves into air all around us and was pretty darn pleased with herself. 🙂

Slow Week, but a Fun Friday

I haven’t posted anything this week, because we’ve been homebodies this week… partially just recovering from all the Halloween activities, but also I think Andrea has had a slight cold maybe? She doesn’t seem all that sick, but she’s been extra tired and cranky this week, and she had somewhat of a rough week at school too, and has napped several days this week. We’ve also had contractors at the house tiling our powder bath and upgrading the sink and doing a few other small repair projects around the house, so we’ve had some distractions around here as well. So, to make up for a somewhat boring week, we had some fun today at home.

We started the fun off with some painting. She’s a super serious painter as you can see.

Then she decided she was done painting, and she got down and found a tape measure I had out, and started measuring everything she could find. She measured all kinds of random objects in our house, then some Halloween candy, and then measured herself.  And, in an unusual turn of events, she actually asked me to take pictures of her showing off her measuring skills! She posed for the picture below and just kept repeating, “Take a picture of me like this, Mommy! Take a picture of me like this!” So what’s a mom to do, but start snapping away of course!
